Throwback Thursday: Great Falls: Where Social Distancing Meets Nature’s Roaring Laughter

During these times of social distancing, Sunshine and I have become avid explorers of the great outdoors. This Sunday was no exception. After our virtual church service and a quick lunch, we decided to venture to a local national park. Great Falls is a fantastic spot, offering several hiking trails and picnic areas. The visitor center was closed, but thankfully, the bathrooms were open—because nothing says “adventure” like a well-timed restroom break!

With the rain from the past week, the water was moving faster than my uncle at a buffet. The cool temperatures meant the park wasn’t too crowded, which was perfect for maintaining our social bubbles. My family was in town, and we’ve always loved this park. There are parts of the old bypass canal to explore, signs marking the flood stages, and at least one wheelchair-accessible ramp to an overlook. Because even nature wants to be inclusive!

We spent the day on the Virginia side, but there’s also a park on the Maryland side. So, if you’re ever in the area, check it out. Just remember, if you hear laughter echoing through the trees, it’s probably just the water having a good time!
