Sunshine, Scallops, and Surprise Road-Trip Reunions

Welcome to Throwback Thursday!

The year was 2021, and at the end of January, Sunshine and I hit the road for Florida—because nothing cures winter blues like citrus, sunshine, and pretending we’re not pale. Judging by this year’s forecast, I probably should’ve planned this trip for now, but hey—hindsight is 20/21, right? So here’s a blast from that adventure, and I hope you enjoy the ride.

The Post:

Our next day was spent meandering through the small Florida towns between St. Augustine and Melbourne. Sunshine reunited with one of her oldest friends, who welcomed us with a breakfast so good it deserved its own postcard. They even spoiled her with gifts. Apparently, the real Florida souvenir isn’t a keychain—it’s a trunk full of makeup. Who knew?

After a morning of fellowship, fruit picking, vegetable gathering, and competitive eating (okay, maybe just enthusiastic eating), we headed down the coast to reconnect with more long-lost friends. Naturally, we discussed the deeper things in life… mostly food. They took us to this amazing little restaurant in Melbourne where the staff was fantastic, precautions were on point, and I’m pretty sure the scallops were blessed by culinary angels.

Next up: hometown friends who also happened to be on vacation. Because nothing says “small world” like driving a few more miles and stumbling across folks from Virginia visiting family at the exact same time. Coordinating vacations is tough, but we handled it like seasoned pros—showing up with food, fresh-picked produce, and enough makeup to start a small boutique.

We even picked up an extra passenger and headed toward Orlando, because every great road trip needs at least one spontaneous addition to the cast.

These are the trips you remember forever—the unexpected reunions, the shared meals, the laughter, and the people who make the journey special. Thanks to everyone who made this day unforgettable for my Sunshine.

Stay tuned… the adventure isn’t over yet!
